Summer is always the quiet period for Eurovision fans as we wait for the new season to commence. Thankfully, the music will always continue and a number of Eurovision artists are still producing new songs for us to enjoy.
Contrary to the commonly perpetuated myth about the song contest killing careers, we’re always thrilled to report that singers associated with Eurovision are thriving.
Here is our latest weekly roundup with a selection of the songs and music videos released recently by Eurovision stars.
New music from Eurovision artists: 2023 | Week 29
Mimicat – “Vais Ter Saudades”
Those who fell in love with Mimicat at Eurovision 2023 can now do it all over again. We’ve been gifted another captivating song from the Portuguese star courtesy of “Vais Ter Saudades” (“You Will Miss”). There’s been a few re-writes during the creation process, with the chorus being changed three times before the final product we have now — but it was no doubt worth it for the end result. In the lyrics, Mimicat sings to her partner and stresses that this relationship is only going to work if he stops devaluing her. If he doesn’t, then she’ll be heading out the door: “If I’m to be your wife / If it’s meant to happen / You’re going to have to give me more of you / You will miss / You will miss me”.
Marco Mengoni feat. ARIETE – “Due Nuvole”
Shortly after representing Italy at Eurovision for the second time in May, Marco Mengoni dropped his new album MATERIA (PRISMA). Included on the LP was the song “Due Nuvole” (“Two Clouds”). Now the Italian star has shared a new version of the track featuring additional vocals from ARIETE. The young singer was also a contestant alongside Marco in Festival di Sanremo 2023, where she placed 14th with “Mare di guai”.
Chingiz Mustafayev – “Söz”
Ben Cristovao & Sara James – “Brighter Day”
The summer weather doesn’t always act like you might want it to. But even if Mother Nature isn’t on your side, there is often a person who can still step in and provide a “Brighter Day” with their cheer and personality. Ben Cristovao, Czechia’s Eurovision 2021 star, has found this in Sara James, Poland’s Junior Eurovision 2021 silver medallist. The pair have come together for a cheery and joyful bop that will bring us the sunshine on any grey and dreary day: “You bring back the summer / On my knees I pray / I′m in love with the sunshine / It′s a brighter day”.
Sanja Vučić – “Zelenooka”
Sometimes it’s all in the eyes. Two-time Eurovision act Sanja Vučić has lost herself in the gaze of another and knows that one look can say 1000 words. In her new single “Zelenooka” (“Green-eyed”), the Serbian singer is hoping this gaze will lead on to a night of passion: “I would give anything for those two black eyes / I would like that smile from Morocco as a gift / I’m not breathing, Sahara’s eyes are tearing me apart / And I’m your new green-eyed”. Musically, the song combines folk influences with orchestral strings to produce a dynamic piece from start to finish.
Ivana Boom Nikolic – “Divlja”
Sanja isn’t the only former Hurricane member to have new music this week. Ivana Boom Nikolic is running “Divlja” (“Wild”) with a fiery bop that has a traditional instrument melody in the post-chorus. In the lyrics, Ivana is seeking to punish her former lover for his deeds. The Serbian star aims to haunt him at every moment: “And let him believe that everyone alive has me / I don’t cry for him / And I sleep with ghosts / Let him believe / I will be his nightmare”.
Carola – “Händer upp”
Carola recently graced the stage of Allsång på Skansen to premiere her new single. “Händer upp”, which translates as “Hands Up” in English, is a celebratory pop anthem that aims to do exactly what the title suggests – get people dancing and raising their hands high. What exactly is Carola celebrating, you may ask. Sweden’s three-time Eurovision star (and one-time winner) is currently commemorating 40 years in the music industry.
Jala Brat & Buba Correlli – Good Fellas
Eurovision 2016 alum Jala Brat has a long-established musical partnership with fellow Bosnian rapper Buba Correlli, having released numerous album together. Their latest joint-LP is Good Fellas. There are 13 tracks to listen to, including previous single “Padam”. It’s not just the two of them on the album, as they’ve also invited other collaborators. German rapper Hava joins them for “Dale”, which is the latest single from the LP and has an accompanying music video.
Sertab Erener – Her Dem Yeşil
Two years ago, Sertab Erener began the process of re-recording some of her past songs with brand new arrangements. This included “Sakin Ol”, “Ateşle Barut”, “Güle Güle Şekerim” and “Vur Yüreğim”. Now the full Her Dem Yeşil (Eng: Ever Green) album is here. This adds six more tracks to the mix, all of which have been given new life. For “Kumsalda”, Turkey’s Eurovision 2003 champion has joined forces with Ozbi to turn the song into a duet – and they’ve recorded a music video for the new version.
ByeAlex és a slepp – “valamiben”
“My heart is strong, but it hurts a lot / Sometimes I feel that it is bored / You have to die at some point, I know that for sure / Life is seasoned in some way, I eat it every day”. Hungary’s Eurovision 2013 representative is struggling to spice up his life. Living day after day with no change, ByeAlex wonders when it may all come to an end. The music video for “valamiben” (“at some point”) tells this story from the view point of an immortal vampire.
wrs & Holy Molly – “Cel mai eu”
Eurovision 2022 star wrs has shared the personal new song “Cel mai eu” (“The best me”). wrs himself does not sing, instead delivering spoken word verses discussing how, despite finding true love that he cherishes, he still feels the need to hide this love from everyone else who would disapprove of it: “When no one sees us / How we laugh and dance […] And now I ask you / My beloved mother / Why do I hide what I feel? / I am not their enemy / And some seem to forget / We are all human”. In between wrs’ verses, Romanian singer Holy Molly provides the sung chorus and notes how love should always be allowed to flourish as it can bring out people’s greatest qualities: “Why can’t I love? / Like everyone does? / That I don’t hurt anyone / Mom, don’t be sorry / Now I’m fine, I’m the best me”.
Aysel – “Воплощение мечты”
Azerbaijan’s Eurovision 2009 bronze medallist has shared “an anthem of the most tender, sincere and purest love”. Aysel has had her “Воплощение мечты” (“Dream come true”) and her heart is now overflowing with love. Musically, the song is an orchestral ballad with additional saxophone solo in the bridge and it could have easily passed for a classic Disney princess song.
Tamara Todevska – “Tornado”
Tamara Todevska is whipping up a storm with the new track “Tornado”. North Macedonia’s two-time Eurovision singer showcases another side to her music with a more urban style. Tamara delivers swagger and awakens her primal, animalistic side due to the fire that her lover is igniting. The lyrics discuss how this flame is setting their relationship alight: “Do you know how that burns me / Your look calls me to it / In the middle of a tornado / We are burning”.
Athena Manoukian – “Tet A Tet”
Athena Manoukian may have been set to represent Armenia at Eurovision 2020, but she was born and raised in Greece. She’s now returning to her Greek music with the new single “Tet A Tet” (“Face To Face”). There’s a driving beat from the offset as Athena explores the positives and negatives of her current relationship. Athena explained more about the message on Instagram:
“TET A TET is a song referring to toxic but also passionate relationships or situationships. It expresses the feeling of staying in this situation even though deep down you know you have to let it go. If you’ve ever had those sleepless nights filled with endless thoughts, late night talks at the beach, then you’re definitely going to relate to it.”
DJ Jad & Wlady feat. Al Bano & Laïoung – “1966”
The year is 1966 and a new Italian star is making his debut in the music scene. Al Bano would go on to sell over 25 million records globally and represent his country at Eurovision on two occasions (1976 and 1985). DJ Jad and Wlady have harnessed some of Al Bano’s original singing prowess for their latest single, sampling his song “Io di notte” (“Me at night”). “1966” also features vocals from rapper Laïoung.
Rui Bandeira – “Não Sei De Ti” & “Tudo A Dançar”
Portugal’s Rui Bandeira has a double single for us. The opening track is “Não Sei De Ti” (“I Don’t Know About You”). It’s a classic 90’s ballad, including an electric guitar intro.
The Eurovision 1999 alum then follows this with the disco-inspired offering “Tudo A Dançar” (“Everyone Dancing”). It comes with a sparkly music video courtesy of the glitter ball and clothing choices. Lyrically, Bandeira wants to keeep grooving all night until the sunrise: “Without seeing the hands in the air, everyone dancing / Everybody sing with me here / With my hands in the air I won’t stop”.
ela. – “Nochmal so tun”
There are some retro influences in ela.’s latest single and music video. “Nochmal so tun” (“Pretend again”) is inspired by her teenage years, when Germany’s Eurovision 2014 singer felt like everything was fine and life would always remain that way. Now ela. wishes she could regain that freedom: “Nothing stays the same, only change stays the same / Let’s steal the lost time / Let’s pretend again / As if the clouds were purple again for us / As if Kurt Cobain was young forever”.
Lucía Pérez – “Yo Te Prometo”
Lucía Pérez promises to give your summer days a chilled Spanish vibe. The Eurovision 2011 alumna’s new single is “Yo Te Prometo” (“I Promise You”). It’s a mid-tempo song with a mixture of percussion and trumpet accompaniment. It all comes together to provide a relaxing and laidback soundtrack for those days you want to imagine escaping to a golden beach.
Aurela Gaçe – “Kolazh Jugu”
